Why track AI Overviews

An AI Overview sits above the first Google result. The few pages it cites get the attention. A page can rank third and still be left out of the answer.

Rank trackers report positions. They do not show if an AI Overview appeared or which pages it cited. Bottally shows both, and asks Google AI Mode too.

Ranked but not cited

Google cites pages that answer the question in a sentence or two, under a heading that matches the query. If you rank but are not cited, read the cited pages. They usually answer more directly.

Cited but not ranked

Overviews also cite pages from outside the top ten. A citation on a keyword you do not rank for shows that your page is close.

AI Overviews vs AI Mode
