Why check your AI visibility

A search results page shows ten links. An AI answer shows one paragraph with two or three names. If your brand is not one of those names, you are not on the buyer’s shortlist.

Your analytics do not show this. Nothing tells you that Perplexity recommends your competitor for your customers’ most common question.

What is AI visibility?

AI visibility is how often AI assistants name or cite your brand. A mention is your brand in the answer text. A citation is your page in the answer’s sources. Bottally measures both, per engine and per question.

How AI engines choose which brands to name

ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google’s AI answers search the web before they answer. They repeat what the pages they find agree on. Brands that many trusted pages mention get named.

Named, cited, or missing

Cited but not named means the engine read your page and recommended someone else. Named but not cited means other sites carry your name. Missing from both means the answer came from pages you are not on yet.

How to improve your AI visibility

  • Write a page for each buyer question. Answer it in the first two sentences.
  • Get listed on the sites the answers cite most.
  • Say the same facts about your product everywhere.
  • Let AI crawlers in. The website audit checks your robots rules.
