How to Rank in ChatGPT: A Step-by-Step Guide for 2026

To rank in ChatGPT, let OpenAI's search crawler read your site, rank in the search results ChatGPT pulls its sources from, and publish pages that directly answer the questions your buyers ask it. Then get your brand onto the third-party pages ChatGPT already cites for those questions. There is no position to submit or buy: you earn a place in the answer one question at a time.

This guide walks through each step, then shows how to test whether it worked without fooling yourself.

What does ranking in ChatGPT mean?

ChatGPT does not show ten blue links. It writes one answer, and that answer can include you in two ways:

  • Named. Your brand appears in the answer text, for example in a list of recommended tools.
  • Cited. One of your pages is linked as a source.

You can have one without the other. ChatGPT can read your guide, link it, and still recommend a competitor. It can also name you from what it already knows and cite nobody.

An answer is built from two places. The first is what the model learned in training: everything written about your brand before its cutoff date. You can't edit that directly. It changes slowly, as more of the web writes about you and newer models are trained.

The second is a live web search. When a question needs current information, ChatGPT searches, reads a handful of pages and cites them. This is the part you can influence this month, and it is what most of this guide is about.

Where do those search results come from? In a study by Seer Interactive of about 100 questions and 500 citations, 87% of ChatGPT's citations matched Bing's top organic results for the same question. Google matched 56%, with a median rank of 17. The authors call their sample directional, but the takeaway is plain: Bing matters for ChatGPT more than most SEO plans assume.

How to rank in ChatGPT: the six steps

Step 1: Let ChatGPT read your site

OpenAI runs three crawlers, and its bot documentation says what each one does:

  • OAI-SearchBot finds pages for ChatGPT search. Sites that block it "will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers", though they can still appear as plain navigational links.
  • GPTBot collects content that may be used to train models. Blocking it does not remove you from search.
  • ChatGPT-User visits a page when a user asks ChatGPT to. OpenAI says it is not used to decide what appears in search.

Open yoursite.com/robots.txt and check that OAI-SearchBot is not disallowed. If you want to appear in search but keep your content out of training, this is the setup:

User-agent: OAI-SearchBot
Allow: /

User-agent: GPTBot
Disallow: /

OpenAI says a robots.txt change takes about 24 hours to reach its search systems.

Then check the layers robots.txt doesn't cover:

  • Your CDN or firewall. Cloudflare changed its default to block AI crawlers in July 2025. If you use Cloudflare or any bot-protection service, look at its AI crawler settings. OpenAI publishes the crawler's IP addresses at openai.com/searchbot.json so you can allow them.
  • Your server logs. Search them for OAI-SearchBot. If a month passes with no visits, something is blocking it or nothing links to you.
  • Your HTML. OpenAI does not document whether its crawler runs JavaScript, so don't depend on it. Run curl -s https://yoursite.com/your-page and check that a sentence from the page body is in the output. If it isn't, the text only exists after scripts run.

Step 2: Get indexed and ranking in Bing

Because ChatGPT's citations track Bing so closely, treat Bing as a first-class search engine:

  1. Verify your site in Bing Webmaster Tools and submit your sitemap.
  2. Use URL Inspection on your key pages to confirm they are indexed.
  3. Turn on IndexNow, which Bing recommends for telling it when pages change.
  4. Search Bing for the short version of each buyer question and note where you rank.

Bing Webmaster Tools also has an AI Performance report, in public preview since February 2026. It shows how often your pages are cited in Microsoft Copilot and Bing's AI summaries, which pages, and the "grounding queries" the AI used to find them. It does not cover ChatGPT. It is still the only first-party report of which of your pages an AI answer actually used, and the queries that led there are a good hint at how ChatGPT may search too.

Step 3: Write down the questions you want to rank for

You don't rank in ChatGPT in general. You rank for a question. Write 20 to 30 questions a buyer asks before choosing a product like yours, and leave your brand name out of them. Branded questions tell you little.

A time-tracking app for agencies might list:

  • best time tracking app for a 20-person agency
  • Harvest alternatives for small teams
  • how do I bill clients for hours tracked across several projects
  • Toggl vs Clockify for freelancers

Good sources for real phrasing: sales call notes, support tickets, Search Console queries of six words or more, People Also Ask boxes, and Reddit threads in your niche. Mix three kinds: category questions ("best X for Y"), comparisons ("X vs Y", "alternatives to X") and problems ("how do I...").

Step 4: Test where you stand today

This is where most guides stop at "check ChatGPT regularly". Here is a method that produces numbers you can trust:

  1. Use a clean session. Open a Temporary Chat or a logged-out window. Your memory and past chats change the answer.
  2. Ask the question the way a buyer would. If the answer comes back without sources, ask it to search the web, so you see the version with citations.
  3. Open the sources. Click Sources under the answer to see every page it linked.
  4. Record five things: were you named, in what position, were you cited, which brands were named instead, and which URLs were cited.
  5. Repeat each question several times, on different days.

Step 5 matters more than it looks. When SparkToro and Gumshoe ran 12 prompts through ChatGPT, Claude and Google's AI 2,961 times, ChatGPT and Google returned the same brand list less than once in 100 runs, and the same list in the same order less than once in 1,000. Yet a stable set of brands kept appearing: in 994 headphone answers, Bose, Sony, Sennheiser and Apple each showed up in 55% to 77% of them. So don't track a position. Track the share of runs that name you.

Our AI visibility checker writes buyer questions from your website (or takes yours), asks ChatGPT with web search on, plus Perplexity, Google AI Overviews and AI Mode, and shows whether you're named, in what position, who is named instead and which sources each answer cites. It asks again every week, so you see the trend.

Step 5: Publish the page each question is missing

Look at the cited URLs from Step 4. They show you what kind of page wins each question. "Best X" questions usually cite list articles. "How do I" questions cite guides. "X vs Y" questions cite comparison pages. If your site has no page of the winning type for a question, that is your next page.

Seer's data also suggests ChatGPT often shortens a long question into a simpler search before it looks anything up. So the page should rank for the short form, and the passage should answer the long form.

Pages that get quoted share a structure:

  • The question as a heading, the answer in the first one or two sentences under it. Detail comes after.
  • One question per page, or one tight cluster. A 6,000-word guide to everything competes with focused pages and usually loses.
  • Specific facts. Prices with dates, limits, named steps, numbers with their source. In the GEO study from Princeton and others (KDD 2024), adding quotations, statistics and cited sources raised a page's visibility in generative answers by 30% to 40% in the authors' benchmark. Keyword stuffing did worse than doing nothing.
  • A plain sentence about who each option is for. "Clockify suits freelancers who need a free plan; Harvest suits agencies that invoice from the same tool." Models lift sentences like that.
  • A sentence that says what you are. "Acme is a time-tracking app for agencies with 5 to 50 people." If your own site never says it plainly, don't expect ChatGPT to.
  • A visible "last updated" date, backed by facts that are actually current.

Step 6: Get named on the pages ChatGPT already cites

Your page is one source among several. For "best" and "top" questions, Seer found affiliates, news sites and aggregators were the most-cited sources. Go back to your list of cited URLs and act on each type:

  • A list article that leaves you out. Email the author a short, factual note: what you do, who it's for, the price, one proof point, and an offer of free access. Ask to be considered at the next update.
  • A review site such as G2 or Capterra. Ask happy customers for a review that says what they use you for.
  • A Reddit or forum thread. Answer under your own name, say who you work for, and only post where you actually help.
  • A competitor's page. You can't get onto it. Publish a better page for that question.

Citations and brand mentions each have their own playbook. We cover them in detail in how to get cited by ChatGPT.

Does ranking on Google help you rank in ChatGPT?

Less directly than you might expect. In Ahrefs' study of 15,000 long-tail prompts, only 8% of ChatGPT's in-text citations ranked in Google's top 10 for the same prompt. Perplexity's overlap was higher, at 28.6%. Google's own AI Overviews are a different story: they draw mostly from pages already on page one, which we cover in how to rank in AI Overviews.

Google SEO still helps you rank on ChatGPT indirectly. Crawlable pages, clear answers and links from other sites are the same work. And the list articles ChatGPT cites are often the ones ranking well on Google, so earning a place in them helps on both.

How to get ranked in AEO?

AEO, answer engine optimization, is the umbrella name for this work across ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews and AI Mode. The steps above apply to all of them: be crawlable, rank in the search index each engine uses, answer questions directly, and be named on the pages they cite. The difference is which index matters most. ChatGPT leans on Bing; Google's AI features lean on Google's top results. If you're sorting out how AEO, GEO and LLM SEO relate, our guide to LLM SEO maps the terms.

Can ChatGPT do SEO?

It can help with parts of it. ChatGPT is good at drafting outlines, suggesting questions, rewriting a paragraph to answer first and writing schema markup. It can't see your Search Console data, crawl your whole site, track whether it names you week over week or publish anything. That is the gap an AI SEO agent fills: it researches keywords, audits the site, writes and publishes on a schedule, and tracks the AI answers in one place.

How long does it take to rank in ChatGPT?

There is no fixed timeline, and anyone who promises one is guessing. Some parts are quick: OpenAI says robots.txt changes reach its search systems in about 24 hours. Others depend on Bing crawling and ranking your new pages, and on other sites writing about you. What the model knows from training changes only when newer models are trained. Plan in months, not days, and measure monthly.

How to measure ChatGPT visibility over time

Keep it simple and repeatable:

  • Visibility rate. For each question, the share of runs that name you. Re-run the same questions every month.
  • Citation rate. The share of runs that link one of your pages.
  • Who wins instead. The brands named when you aren't. This is your competitor list for AI, and it is often different from your Google competitors.
  • Referral visits. In your analytics, look for sessions from chatgpt.com. ChatGPT adds utm_source=chatgpt.com to the links it sends, so those visits are easy to filter.

Don't report a single "rank". As the SparkToro data shows, a position in one answer is mostly noise.

Start with your baseline

Add your site to the AI visibility checker. You will see, for your buyer questions, whether ChatGPT, Perplexity, AI Overviews and AI Mode name you, who they name instead, and which pages they cite. That list of cited pages is your to-do list for Steps 5 and 6. If you'd rather have the questions tracked every week and the missing articles written and published for you, see Bottally Pro on the pricing page.
