How to Get Cited by ChatGPT (and Get Your Brand Mentioned)
To get cited by ChatGPT, your page has to come up in the web search ChatGPT runs for a question, and it has to hold a passage that answers that question more plainly than the other pages it reads. To get your brand mentioned in the answer itself, other sites ChatGPT reads also have to name you. Start by checking which sources ChatGPT cites for your buyers' questions today, then close the gap one source at a time.
This post covers citations and brand mentions specifically. For the groundwork (letting OpenAI's crawler in, getting indexed in Bing, building a question list), start with how to rank in ChatGPT.
What is the difference between being cited and being mentioned?
They are separate outcomes, and they need separate fixes.
- Cited means one of your URLs is linked as a source for the answer.
- Mentioned means your brand name appears in the answer text.
That gives four cases, and each one points to a different problem:
- Cited and mentioned. You are the answer and the proof. Keep the page current.
- Cited, not mentioned. ChatGPT read your page and used it, then recommended someone else. This is common for blogs that explain a topic well but never say plainly that the company's product is an option for it.
- Mentioned, not cited. ChatGPT knows you from training data or from other sites, but none of your pages is the best source for this question.
- Neither. You are missing from the pages it reads and from what it remembers.
Before you change anything, find out which case you're in for each question you care about.
How does ChatGPT choose which sources to cite?
OpenAI doesn't publish its selection rules, but what it documents, plus outside testing, gives a workable picture:
- It decides whether to search at all. Many answers come from the model's memory with no sources. Seer Interactive cites a Semrush study of 80 million ChatGPT queries in which 46% triggered a web search; Seer's own smaller sample put it closer to 30%. Questions that depend on current facts, such as prices or this year's best options, are the ones that need a search. Only answers that searched carry citations, so those are the questions to target.
- It turns the question into a search. Seer's authors believe ChatGPT often shortens a long question into a simpler query first.
- It pulls results from a search index. In Seer's test, 87% of ChatGPT's citations matched Bing's top organic results for the same question. Only pages OpenAI's search crawler is allowed to read can show up in ChatGPT search answers, according to OpenAI.
- It reads a set of pages and cites the ones it used. Being retrieved is not the same as being cited. Your page competes at the level of passages: the paragraph that answers the question cleanly is the one that gets used.
- It writes the answer. Brand names in the text come from those pages and from what the model learned in training, which is why you can be cited without being named and named without being cited.
How do you see which sources ChatGPT cites for your questions?
You can do this by hand in an afternoon:
- Open a clean session. Use a Temporary Chat or a logged-out window so your history doesn't change the answer.
- Ask a real buyer question without your brand in it. If the answer has no sources, ask it to search the web.
- Click Sources under the answer and paste every URL into a sheet, with the question and the date.
- Note who is named in the answer text, in order.
- Run each question three to five times over a week. Answers vary a lot from run to run. In SparkToro's test of 2,961 responses, ChatGPT gave the same list of brands less than once in 100 runs of the same prompt. The domains that show up in most of your runs are the ones that matter; one-off sources are noise.
- Label each cited URL by type: your site, a competitor's site, a list or review article, a community thread (Reddit, Quora), a reference page (Wikipedia), news, or a directory.
That labelled list is the most useful thing you'll make. It tells you whether the fix is on your site or someone else's.
If you want this done for you, the AI visibility checker does the first four steps for your buyer questions: it asks ChatGPT with web search on, plus Perplexity, Google AI Overviews and AI Mode, and lists whether you're named, whether you're cited and every source each answer linked.
One more free data source: Bing Webmaster Tools' AI Performance report shows which of your pages Microsoft Copilot and Bing's AI summaries cite, and the "grounding queries" that led to them. It doesn't cover ChatGPT, but given how closely ChatGPT's citations track Bing, it's a useful hint at which pages and phrasings already work.
How to get cited by ChatGPT: write the passage it quotes
ChatGPT cites pages, but it uses passages. Write each important section so that it would make sense pasted into an answer on its own.
- Put the question in the heading and the answer in the first sentence. "How much does X cost?" followed by "X costs $40 a month per user, billed annually, as of October 2026." Context and caveats come after.
- Name the subject in every key sentence. "It supports SSO" means nothing once lifted out of the page. "Acme supports SSO on its Business plan" does.
- Give facts a model can attribute. Prices with dates, limits, named steps, definitions, and numbers with their source. In the GEO study (Aggarwal et al., KDD 2024), adding quotations, statistics and citations to a page raised its visibility in generative answers by 30% to 40%, and the paper reports that lower-ranked pages gained the most. Keyword stuffing made things worse.
- Publish something only you can say. Numbers from your own product or support queue, a test you ran, a price comparison you keep current. If you are the only source of a fact, you are the only page that can be cited for it.
- Keep one question per section and one main question per page. A focused page beats a sprawling one when the model is looking for a single clean answer.
- Show a real "last updated" date and keep the facts under it current.
- Make the page readable without help. Text in the HTML the server sends, no login wall, no cookie overlay hiding the content, and OAI-SearchBot allowed in robots.txt.
What not to do: don't hide text aimed at AI models, don't repeat the keyword in every sentence, and don't publish thin question pages by the hundred. None of it helps you get cited, and hidden text also breaks Google's spam policies.
How to get your brand mentioned by ChatGPT
A citation needs one good page. A mention usually needs other people's pages too, because ChatGPT names the brands that the pages it reads agree on.
Get onto the pages that are already cited
Go back to your labelled source list and work through the third-party URLs. For "best" and "top" questions, Seer found affiliates, news sites and aggregators were the most-cited sources.
- List and review articles. Email the author a four-line note: what you do, who it's for, what it costs, one proof point. Offer free access so they can test it. Ask to be considered at the next update, and don't ask for a ranking.
- Review platforms such as G2, Capterra and Trustpilot. Ask customers who use you for a specific job to say what that job is. A review that says "we use it to bill agency clients by project" helps more than "great tool".
- Reddit, Quora and niche forums. Answer questions where you know the answer, under your own name, and say where you work. One useful answer in a thread ChatGPT already cites is worth more than fifty posts nobody reads.
- Publications and podcasts in your niche. An expert quote with your company named in a trade article is the kind of mention that ends up in both live search and future training data.
Backlinko calls this LLM seeding: putting your brand in the formats and places models read and cite.
Make your facts say the same thing everywhere
ChatGPT merges what many pages say about you. If your homepage calls you "project management software", your LinkedIn page says "collaboration platform" and G2 lists you under time tracking, the model has three weak signals instead of one strong one. Pick one sentence that says what you are, who it's for and what it costs, and use it on your site, LinkedIn, Crunchbase, review profiles and directories.
Know what the data says, and what it doesn't
There is good research on this for Google's AI answers, less for ChatGPT. In Ahrefs' study of about 75,000 brands, branded web mentions had the strongest correlation with being mentioned in Google AI Overviews (0.664), well ahead of the number of backlinks (0.218). That study covers Google, not ChatGPT, and correlation is not proof. It does fit what Seer saw in ChatGPT, where the most-cited sources for "best" questions were third-party sites: affiliates, news sites and aggregators. Both suggest that what other sites say about you counts for more than how many links point at you.
Why does ChatGPT mention my competitors and not me?
Match what you see to the cause:
- You're on none of the cited pages. The fix is off your site: the outreach above.
- You're on the cited pages, but low or described vaguely. Send the author updated facts and a clearer one-line description.
- Your page is cited, but you're not named. Your page explains the topic but never says your product solves it. Add a short section that says who your product is for and when to pick it, and when not to.
- ChatGPT describes you wrongly. Find the cited page with the wrong fact and ask for a correction. Then make sure your own site states the right fact in a sentence that can be quoted.
- The answer has no sources at all. It came from memory. You can't change that quickly. Ask again with search on to see the live version, and keep earning mentions so the next model knows you.
How long until ChatGPT cites a new page?
There is no published timeline. OpenAI says robots.txt changes reach its search systems in about 24 hours. After that, the page has to be crawled, indexed in the search results ChatGPT uses and judged the best passage for a question. Re-test your question list monthly and look at the trend, not single runs.
How to measure citations and mentions
Track two numbers per question, per month:
- Citation rate: the share of runs where one of your URLs is among the sources.
- Mention rate: the share of runs where your brand is named in the answer.
Add the list of domains cited most often for each question; when a new one appears, that's a page to get onto. For traffic, filter your analytics for visits from chatgpt.com: ChatGPT tags the links it sends with utm_source=chatgpt.com.

Find out which sources ChatGPT cites for you
Add your website to the AI visibility checker. You'll get the cited sources for each answer and the brands named instead of you, which is your outreach list and your writing list in one. If you'd like those questions re-asked every week across ChatGPT, Perplexity, AI Overviews and AI Mode, and an article published each day aimed at the gaps, see Bottally Pro pricing.
